At long last, here is the thoroughly revised and updated third edition of the hugely successful The Art of Electronics. It is widely accepted as the best single authoritative book on electronic circuit design. In addition to new or enhanced coverage of many topics, the third edition includes 90 oscilloscope screenshots illustrating the behavior of working circuits, dozens of graphs giving highly useful measured data of the sort that is often buried or omitted in datasheets but which you need when designing circuits, and 80 tables (listing some 1650 active components), enabling intelligent choice of circuit components by listing essential characteristics (both specified and measured) of available parts. The new Art of Electronics retains the feeling of informality and easy access that helped make the earlier editions so successful and popular. It is an indispensable reference and the gold standard for anyone, student or researcher, professional or amateur, who works with electronic circuits.

    Overall, this book is really great. It covers a wide range of topics. It presents some relevant theory and historical perspectives. And, it contains schematics of sample circuits and references part numbers of components currently in production. Keep in mind that the 3rd edition of this book was published in 2015 so there are definitely some more contemporary components out there but often they are still made by the same manufacturer.

    One of my favorite parts about owning this book though is that it has often been quicker, less frustrating, and more illuminating than doing a simple online search when I first sit down to design a circuit. Of course, this statement should be treated with a caveat: I am not a professional electrical engineer. I don't have any educational nor vocational experience in analog electronics, and I'm not designing insanely complicated circuits. Most of what I have learned comes from this book, online forums, and technical datasheets from manufacturers.

    Because of this, I would say it is an incredibly beginner friendly text for those designing circuits. It does contain math, uses technical vocabulary, and asks you to read a schematic/graph/table, but these are all well labeled, accurately defined, and clearly depicted. I haven't found myself lost because of a simple omission that the authors felt was too obvious to mention nor a poorly defined or ambiguous term. Needless to say, it sits happily on my workbench full of notes and a couple burn marks from my soldering iron.

    I have other similar books. This is good though it would be better with the lab book which costs extra. It has terms that are somewhat unfamiliar. It uses Engineering terms and solutions. This sometimes makes it a bit hard to follow and uses engineering solutions witch use harder to follow solutions. Great book though.

    In my experience, Amazon has a habit of delivering damaged books. My copy of The Art of Electronics reads fine but the book's corners are bent and some of the pages have damaged edges. This isn't much of an issue when it occurs on cheap paperbacks but for more expensive books like this one, it can be very frustrating.

    I wholeheartedly recommend the book but I'd also recommend you buy it somewhere else.

    While it is obvious this is a very thoroughly well put together textbook. I'd use myself as an example that it is not very friendly to new/very-new beginners.

    It introduces new concepts, electrical components well, but then goes very fast and in depth in these topics while not providing enough time to practice, or explain everything covered in more detail.

    I will be switching to other resources to learn for now at least, and look forward to revisiting this book once I have a better grasp of the fundamentals.

    Maybe I'm dumb (lol) or maybe the teaching style isn't cutting it for me, so this is just my experience. I'll say it again, there's a lot of helpful information in this book it seems, I just cannot process it.

    21st printing (2921) 1227 pages now, wow! It came the day after I ordered it, a bit reduced in price from previously. Calgary post secondary schools are not allowing the public back into their libraries anytime soon so I had to break down and start building my own electronics bookshelf. At least I can jot notes in my own copy, and will last many years.

    Genuine copy of The Art of Electronics. The contents of this book are greatly edifying. Contains great amounts of knowledge passed on by experienced members of the field. As an undergraduate, I have found wonderful kernels of knowledge through the text that I have not found in other texts, making it worth reading sections covering topics I am already confident in. It is written in a casual style (compared to other engineering texts). I found the humor of the authors help keep me engaged. The text focuses more on the design of real circuits, making it a great addition to other texts more focused on analysis and proofs.Amazon's packaging was mediocre. The hardcover arrived with dented corners. Beware when ordering books on Amazon as their book packaging has dropped in quality.

    As a computer engineer, working for years now more as a software developer (be it embedded linux C, or desktop/distributed C++/C#), I've forgotten a thing or two about electronics, especially analog, so I bought the book, hoping to remind myself a bit about it. The book is massive, and covers a plethora of topics within electronics, analog, digital, hybrid, ... Even goes high enough to cross into the field of computer engineering itself (chapters 14 and 15, some of the things definitely not something I'd expect to find in an electronics book).
    That being said, I was quite astonished to see that there is practically no mention of the PN junction, or to be more precise, the only mention is describing what two flavors of BJTs there are, but nothing what it actually is, how it's created, what are the characteristics, what kind of effect does it have on the device itself, nothing! Not in the diodes section, not in the BJT section, nor anywhere else in the book for that matter. Reminds me of a similar case of one C book where the author was explaining pointers, without explaining the dynamic memory allocation, or the methods used for it. That was as equally a weird thing to read as this is!
    Another thing, that is maybe more of a personal preference than anything else, is the two column layout of the pages. Not something one usually sees in technology books (or data sheets) these days. It makes it a bit harder to read, and the schemes, graphs and tables are smaller, and a bit harder to see what's being presented (though some larger circuits do take the entire width of the page).
    I just got the book a few days ago, and these are some of the points that I've noticed. I still think the book is worth buying, but just can't wrap my head around the missing PN junction explanation. One would think that that'd be the center topic of a 1200+ pages long electronics book?

    I'll preface this review by stating that the 2nd edition of this book was profoundly influential during the early part of my engineering career. It truly was the bible for new designers of the era. So that's a pretty high bar to meet or exceed for this newest edition.

    This new version, though. I don't know. I think it's basically two old-timers who haven't completely embraced modern technology. They still insist on wasting a lot of words to describe the I/O characteristics of discrete logic chips of the 74xx variety. They also still believe it's admirable to favor through-hole components. (A newbie electronics designer should be counseled to invest in a good microscope and hot-air tools for SMT). They also haven't quite caught up to the reality that designers today send their board designs to prototype assembly houses for quite reasonable cost. These two old-timers still seem to believe that it's a good idea to hand assemble boards on their benchtop. And there's really no excuse to include thumbwheel switches in photos of front panel controls and indicators. Come on guys, for real? Is it even possible to buy thumbwheel switches anymore? No mention of LCD displays? Paragraphs on IDE, SCSI, and GPIB. Again, seriously? Please save the trees and delete that stuff.

    Overall, I just feel like this book contains a lot of stuff that would lead a true newbie down the wrong, obsolete roads. As an experienced designer myself, I can take a lot of the stuff in this book with a grain of salt, and dismiss the stuff that I personally feel is obsolete. I'm not so sure that a newbie would have enough experience to separate the wheat from the chaff in this book.

    With all that said, I did enjoy the chapter on programmable logic. It was an excellent top level, practical view of the dominant technologies and design entry methods. I also liked the microcontroller discussions. The CPU chapter is also very good (just pretend like the ISA bus conversation doesn't exist).

    I thank the authors for their update to the original edition. There's a lot of great stuff in here for older designers with some experience and context. I really can't recommend this book to newbies to the field. I just feel like there's a lot of stuff in here that will lead you astray.

    I worried when I ordered this that it might be a counterfeit. I was wary because several bloggers and YouTube channels had reviewed the problem with counterfeits of this book on Amazon. I didn't want to risk buying a used copy for this reason, so I held my breath and ordered a new copy at the full discounted price. This also gave me pause because this edition of the book came out in 2015, that made it five years old.I need not have worried. The text I received was reprinted in 2019 (14th printing), just one year ago. Errata had been corrected, and the binding was pristine. I am very pleased.In case you're not familiar, this text is considered the standard for a single semester course in modern electronics. It is full of practical circuits and advice that makes it an excellent reference. It discusses circuits in a way that is practical, not just mathematically rigorous.The only disappointing thing for me, a 65-year-old non-student and hobbyist, is that there is no appendix with solved exercises that I can check my work against. Most groups on the net are reluctant to publish the solutions because they think they're helping someone do their homework. A few folks have started posting solutions only to give up before they even get through chapter 1. Oh, well.

    This review might seem harsh but to be clear, I think this is a terrific manual, at least for a certain kind of reader. To figure out whether this is might be your primary text for learning electronics, this quote, from the open paragraph of the first edition, is relevant: "We have attempted to combine the pragmatic approach of the practicing physicist with the quantitative approach of the engineer, who wants a thoroughly evaluated circuit design."

    And that's the rub... the authors assume the reader is already well-trained in a certain kind of thinking and, moreover, working in a certain kind of environment, one in which "combining the discipline of a circuit design engineer with the perspective of a practicing experimental physicist" makes sense. The result a book that describes electronic design as a combination of "basic laws, rules of thumb, and a large bag of tricks".

    The problem for the raw beginner, of course, is that applying rules of thumb and tricks requires some prior experience or study; otherwise one is simply applying a recipe and hoping for the best. In summary, if you are learning on your own and looking for your first electronics text or you are looking for a mathematics-free way of doing electronics design, it is probably best to look elsewhere as you find AoE to be frustratingly opaque.

    If, however, you already know how to work with passive components, use a DMM and and oscilloscope, greek symbols, complex numbers and simple derivatives don't frighten you, and you are willing to puzzle out the formulas and circuit diagrams which fill AoE, you will learn a lot about practical design. The text flips back and forth between presentations of basic circuit theory and practice and practical circuits designed to solve particular problems. To really "get" what is presented, you really should plan on working out designs on paper and building them, too, as you go through the text. The first four chapters, covering passives, BJTs, FETs, and op amps, will give you a sound, practical basis in design and a foothold in deciphering and debugging other people's circuits.

    That last bit is, for me, the biggest weakness of AoE's approach to teaching electronics: depending on a collection of rules of thumb and design tricks is a reasonable way to approach design but it may not be quite so helpful in fixing other people's stuff (or maybe even your own designs when they don't work as planned). When you are working in that mode, reading a circuit is often requires more basic principles that are glossed over in AoE's "bag of tricks" approach.

    Summary: as a second or third text, or in the context of a guided lab course, or as a reference or refresher for someone returning to electronics, this should be on your shelf. For the electronics newbie, or someone not comfortable with learning a little math, probably not the place to start.

    I own the printed copy but wanted something a bit more "portable". Let's face it, the print version is a tomb; it's an authoritative and well-written tomb, but it's big and bulky. In my efforts to join the 21st century, I've been trying to convert my library to a more electronic version especially since hurricane Florence flooded my home and shop. I lost a lot of what I considered really cool reference material along with a lot of other stuff. I'm giving this 4 stars since my older Kindle would not support its format, and I've only been able to access it on the Fire tablet, my PC, and ny Galaxy 2 active - I'm also struggling as an older engineer with page-turning withdrawal. I'm not able to completely make the transition from paper and sticky notes to their electronic forms, although I am getting better.

    I'm not going to talk to much about the contents, there are plenty of reviews that cover that. Anyone who is serious about electronics should have this and a number of other books as reference. For quality and content it gets 4 stars.

    However, in this day and age, it isn't really acceptable that ebooks can't be read on a kindle. I accept this is due to the typesetting, which is complicated in this book. However, I think it is high time books of this ilk modernise and provide flowable formats. There is nothing specifically in this tome that couldn't be re-set.

    I only knock one star off because there are plenty of alternative readers (Tablets, Web, etc) that do support print set books like this, so I still get the value from the purchase. But not being able to use my kindle at all is disappointing.

    After reading the through the 1st chapter I can already say that this purchase was well worth it! As an EE I decided to pick up this book to brush up on the basics and learn more practical design considerations for my career and hobbies. Even in the first chapter, they clearly state observations that took many hours of practice for me to understand. Horowitz and Hill explain the concepts in ways I hadn't even thought of, and things I wish a professor had told me years ago. With that being said, I'm excited looking forward for the chapters on transistor, opamp, and filter design, because I've already learned a ton from the chapter I didn't expect to gain much from!

    I bought this book "used" but it came in shrink wrap in like new condition, YMMV. I saved about $30 buying one of the used books this way.

    To the beginner, this is an intermediate level book. Though it does start off with basic concepts of voltage, current, resistance, inductance, etc., the underlying tone is that you should have at least some basic grasp of these concepts to begin with. Very quickly it starts diving into somewhat more in-depth discussions on these topics, but it is still kept at a relatively moderate level. My last calculus class was 20 years ago, and while it helps my understanding of what is going on (electronics is full of differential equations, can't really get around it) the way they present the math you don't have to derive the formulas, most of it is boiled down to relatively basic algebra and maybe a little bit of trig. If you want the derivations, they're back in the appendices, but the authors state early on that they try to keep the complex math to a minimum.

    I have had the book for about two months and am still on chapter 3, mainly because I find myself having to go back and re-read some passages several times. This is because the book is somewhat sparse with examples, and I'm more of a person who learns by application. I may pick up the companion "Learning the Art of Electronics" which is supposed to be more hands on.

    By far the best professional electronics reference ever written. This has been a classic for as long as I can remember. Countless readers, from hardcore EEs to hobbyists have spent endless hours with this book. If you are serious about learning electronics, it's history and future directions, this is the book for you. You will be able to dive as deep or just skim the surface, it's your choice. I have two things to consider when purchasing this work. First, think about both the hardcopy and eBook offerings. I find having both is a big help. One is the classic form you can sit with and pounder. The other provides rapid search and linking ability so you can jump straight to the web to expand your knowledge. The second point is not so happy. If you suffer from Arduino cancer and can not see yourself looking at an equation or learning what is going on inside the little board in front of you, go learn something on YouTube and come back when you're ready. All in all, if you're serious, this is the right place to start your work.

    About 20 years ago I read my first book in electronics by the authors (AoE second edition) which has been my reference book for all questions about electronics since then. Still, I was looking forward to see this newest one updated after so many developments happened in electronics and CIT over the last two decades. And the third edition exceeded all expectations that I had! The book delivered so much in depth knowledge of contemporary electronics as well as tricks to design reliable and predictable circuits employing newest electronics components. I believe the book would be incredibly interesting reading and useful reference for all audiences: students, engineers, and hobbyist alike.

    If you are a grad student working with electronics, this is an absolute must have. You won't learn the very basics, and it would certainly take a lifetime to understand all the inner workings of what is contained here in full detail, but I am amazed on how much knowledge and tools of the trade are printed in these pages. It really seems it was written thinking about the life in the laboratory, and thus I believe it can be more appreciated by a scientifically/technically mature audience.

    I first saw this book many years ago on a workbench; leafing through it, it was the sort of book that no working electronics techo/designeruser should be without. Now sort-of-retired, recently I googled for some information on using LM317s, which lead to the latest edition of the Art of Electronics sample chapter which covered the subject brilliantly! I was impressed enough to order the book right away. It has lived up (and more) to my original impression long ago.

    Great book for an experience engineer looking for information about a wide variety of different electronic subjects. Contains a wealth of information from the real world and very useful instruction on applying that information. 4 stars for the e-textbook format. It is difficult to read on the large iPad, for example, as there is no ability to increase the font size. The paging is setup for vertical format, but that makes the charts and drawings way too small to read for older eyes. Turning it sideways allows a larger font, but then the two column format means you have to scroll down and back up for each page. The expand gesture on iPad works, but it is reset on the next page. Amazon needs to rework the e-text format for better mechanics while reading.

    Much of this information exists on the internet in one form or another. What is not easy to find is the "fireside chat" perspective. For example, rather than compare various datasheets of logic gates online, you could read the section on "logic family chronology". Or, at a larger scale, read the entire chapter on op-amps if you have any interest in them. The writing style is occasionally rigorous, but often has the feeling of having a beer with several VERY seasoned engineers.

    As such, I use it in two modes. I occasionally will dedicate an hour to randomly read half of a chapter as it interests me. And sometimes I will look up something specific like op-amp stability. And I'll continue to look up subjects on the internet also.

    I'm a technician well versed in test equipment and troubleshooting at component level. I'm NOT an engineer and would never claim feats above my ability.

    This books introduction made it sound like not a whole lot of math would be used when in fact this could be used as an engineers reference there's so many equations. I was looking for something that simply explained the operation of different circuits and ended up sifting through a lot of numbers.

    In the end of rather have something more thorough for future endeavours than something lacking in detail so I didn't rate this poorly as I'm also not 100% sure who it's specifically designed for.

    Wow! I missed out so far. They mastered writing on the edge between being entertaining and sustenance. Too entertaining and the information density suffers,,not entertaining enough and I use it as an encyclopedia and don't read for the fun of it. I guess most EEs kept this book as their dirty secret trying to stay ahead of non EEs. It is very readable and really, really helps you getting into the terminology and to understand the principals of electronics and electronic circuity. It is NOT a cookbook but it will give yo great ideas and let you look at a problem from a different angle. I am working with EEs for a long time and I am convinced that I could have achieved more, designed better instruments if I had known about this book from the beginning of my career.

    If you're able to follow any of the Mims book you'll be able to follow this one. Just be prepared that this goes more indepth and handles hundreds of less common components.

    The information in "H & H" (The Art of Electronics) is well presented and covers a wide range of electronics topics with as much detail as can fit between the covers. Alas, despite the hefty size of the book, not everything can be covered in as much detail as one would like. There are also a number of errors that can confuse the reader upon close reading of the book. For example, the section on PLLs appeared to contain main-body text from the second edition, but the calculation summary table and schematic figure used different values from those in the text. Even so, the book helped me break through a mental block I had on the subject. The authors have a website in which known errata are corrected, so if your calculations or designs don't agree with the book's, you can check the website to see if you've found another error or you're losing your mind. The authors' conversational style never wavers from its intended audience - the technically-minded enthusiast, hobbyist, or engineer confused by other, more in-depth, but "math heavy" texts that do not provide the rapid insight that "H & H" does.

    I happily owned a first edition until it was destroyed by a flood in 2013. I recently purchased a used second edition and (what I thought was) a used third edition. The third edition is apparently being counterfeited and sold by many "Other Sellers". Beware! The authors' web site details the extent of the counterfeiting and how you can recognize it. Considering how much effort the authors put into writing such an informative book, and how useful it was to me, I felt compelled to return the counterfeit item and am now engaged in finding the genuine article. The "other seller" who sold it to me quickly refunded the purchase amount and apologized for the inconvenience. Hopefully he will return any remaining copies to his distributer with a stern note about this subject.

    This is a terrific book for learning electronics in a holistic way. It is dense and sometimes it may take a number of times reading a section to understand what is meant, but that is not due to a lack of quality explanations, but simply due to the complexity of the subject. It imparts insight for choosing various circuit configurations and gives tips from expert designers for selecting appropriate components and devices. There are plenty of illustrations, schematic diagrams, photos, characteristic curves, charts and tables with helpful data. This is an excellent reference manual no matter what your level of electronics experience is. I would think that it is a bit complicated for the very first book on learning electronics but after that it would be an excellent learning tool. I have both editions and this edition is well worth the money. It does not go terribly deep into theory which is great but gives you enough detail to fully work with the various electronic components and circuits. It has a vast number of practical example circuits with good definitions of their operation and design.

    I bought this textbook for refresher purposes in preparation for grad school, as it came highly-recommended. While this is a very dense book with lots of useful information, the author's attempts to remove the math from the chapters on analog topics (1-9) will likely make it challenging to understand for people who don't already have experience with electronics. Where this book really shines, however, is starting in Chapter 10: Digital Logic, and from there on you'll find extremely useful examples and explanations.

    I would recommend it as a second or third book to accompany another text, such as Microelectronic Circuits by Sedra and Smith. I still have to give it four stars because of how valuable it will be if you are an experienced electronics hobbyist or engineer.

    I think after all those years after the second edition the authors could done better. They put more pictures trying to make it more "user friendly" as if that was really what was missing... What I really think is missing is this:

    1. A Paperback would be better than a hard one, hardcovers aren't handy and only make sense for books with a big paper area like A3 paper with big pictures;
    2. The appendixes are still a missed opportunity, they added the Thévenin's Theorem, 2 pages, but with 2 pages more they could demonstrate how they solve important equations, like in in Chapter 1 - Foundations! For instance, how do you obtain the curve V = A.e^[-t/(RC)] for capacitors charge and discharge, the wikipedia has all that in a single page. Also, the complex numbers solution given for impedance Z stated in the book should be supported with an appendix, because is the trick for solving an equation with integrals and derivatives, very well explained in an Youtube video entitled "13. LCR Circuits—AC Voltage" from the channel "YaleCourses". I mean, what is the point of explaining some calculus and complex numbers in Appendix A - Math Review - without really use them? All this, simple because no book about electronics give this kind of information, so, I expected that this supper book would do just that!

    A good example in this book however is the explained formula for resistors in parallel, instead of the easy way that all other books use, the sum of the conductance, it uses the first and second Kirchhoff's rules to do that!

    また、ベテランエンジニアには、自分の知識を整理したり、あるいは補足するのに適しています。
    微に入り細に入り検証することが主な仕事のアナログ回路設計ですが、著者の実績と経験に
    裏打ちされたユーモアとウィットに富んだ語り口調は堅苦しくなく、読んでいて思わずにやりと
    してしまいます。といっても、文章は平易な英語で書かれていて、英文のデータシートが読める
    人には読みにくいところは無いと思います。

    やや褒めすぎかも知れませんが、アナログ回路のエレガンスから泥臭いところまで、なんでも
    かんでも魅力的です。私的には第5章の精密アナログ回路の章は本当にわくわくします。
    アナログ回路設計を生業とする技術者として、自信を持ってお薦めします。

    I am a PhD student in microelectronics, and I went through my whole education without knowing that The Art of Electronics existed.
    All I know I learned from other books, and I recently stumbled upon the AoE. How refreshing! I love reading about circuits that I know about in a different, intuitive way.
    I can't speak for it as a first book in electronics, but it is a pleasure to read through it and see things from a different perspective.
    My knowledge of circuits that I thought I knew, i.e. the integrator or other op amps circuits, is greatly improving thanks to the AoE.
    I borrowed a copy from my university library, and ordered one for myself after 3 days of reading.

    If you think that this is a book for the beginner only, you're wrong: it gives a lot also to the more experienced engineers.

    THE desktop EE resource. The Kindle edition is really, really good. No scanned schematics, very well done. I was a bit leary about spending so much for an electronic book, but honestly, its what I have with me now all the time, so I figured what the hell. I am very glad I did. Excellent ebook quality - you can zoom in on anything and its just a crisp and clean as a book. I own 2 hard copies of the 2nd edition and the workbook, and this is a really great update. Yes, the price is horrible. I'm not going to argue that. BUT... its worth it. The Kindle edition is also SEARCHABLE. That alone makes it a better choice for me. I have it wherever I go, and its searchable. Only thing I wish it had was hyperlinked pages numbers in the TOC and index. Other than this, its great. Even this isn't a big deal, since navigation in the book uses the real page numbers.

    This is the ultimate tome of electronics knowledge. If you need to know something you'll find it here in approachable language and with applicable formulas and example circuits. It is very expensive, but considering how much is covered it's worth the money. I'd recommend this to anyone that is experimenting with electronics. I'm sure a professional would also find it useful.

    The 1st one was in 1980, then the 2nd was in 1989...
    After a long delay, here comes the 3rd Edition (2015) of a well-known Horowitz & Hill book, The Art of Electronics.
    Published by Cambridge University Press.
    It's more than 1200 of pages, and more than 2 kg of weight.

    Cons:
    - quite expensive (e. g., for a poor student; but beware of cheap counterfeit copies!);
    - quite heavy (more than 2 kg, handle with care!!!);
    - quite a lot of typos (but it depends on the printing revision; please check the "Errata" section on the official website);
    - some of the useful tables, diagrams and sections present in previous editions are removed from this one.

    Pros:
    - heavy weight (yes!);
    - nice typography;
    - the signature Horowitz & Hill text style (with significant amounts of humor and irony) remains the same;
    - new chapters added to describe the modern reality of electronics world.

    IMHO, it's:
    - a cool, somewhat funny supplementary textbook for electronics-related students;
    - a nice reference book for professionals needing to recall some specific details;
    - and finally, it's a nice gift for all the AoE fans :-)

    From Mr. Hill: "Our book is especially well suited for working circuit-design engineers".
    It is also useful for technicians who would like to be circuit-design engineers. The presentation is readable and decidedly NOT sleep-inducing. The "not" deserves emphasis. The practical circuit examples are golden. Who can read straight electronics theory without falling unconscious?

    My only complaint is one that is common to all tomes that cover such a wide range of topics: It's a tome. Being well-stricken with years (and poor eyesight), I find it difficult to manage such a large volume while working out the examples. I would love to see it in electronic form, or, failing that, presented in multiple smaller volumes (with larger print).

    Not that I would think of giving it up, even in its current form.

    This book is a must have if you are an EE/CSE or are just into tinkering around with electronics.

    Breaks the material down pretty well in an easy to understand way. It isn't super heavy with equations, they use them where they are needed to calculate out parts, but you won't find seven pages of equations as an explanation of how a component works.

    I am currently in my senior year of my undergrad degree in EE and everyone I loan the book to comes back within five minutes totally blown away and makes a statement along the lines of "I seriously learned more in three minutes with this book than I did in an entire semester of electronics".

    The guys that wrote this book have been teaching electronics together for several decades in an environment where the focus is on teaching, not research. They understand what it takes to teach students the material and haven't lost touch with what it is like to see this material for the first time. Not to say that this is low level material. It is an amazing reference that is written from a different perspective than the average electronics textbook.

    For all of the reasons everyone else has given, I too love this book (and its predecessors). In section after section, the authors' to-the-point yet warm narrative brings together just the right level of model, just the right rules of thumb, and representative industry data, to allow the designer new to the topic to gain insight into how a more-experienced designer would proceed. Worth its weight in gold.

    That said -- purchasers should choose a "sold by" vendor carefully. The copy I received is a counterfeit (verified by the real publisher), with poor quality production and assembly, including misspelling one of the authors' names on the title page, and many typos in the Table of Contents.

    Obviously this does not cast any shadow on the real book. If anything, it's a tribute to the real book's popularity.

    The book is terrific, deserving of grand praise, as stated by the many fans. But to those reviewers who down-rated this because it is not appropriate for absolute beginners - I agree. And that's OK. Really, would *you* buy a 1200+ page, 5+ pound, $80+, book for an *absolute beginner*? Next, this is a very heavy book, easily damaged if simply put in a padded envelope. Before you buy, look for or ask about the vendor's packaging methods. Insist that they protect it -- wrap it in *thick* bubble wrap, or shrink-wrap onto thick cardboard sheet that's larger than the book -- and ship it in a sturdy box.

    One of the very best books on Electronics ever period. New edition was over due, very much worth buying- give your second edition to a student, etc- still very valid. I'm an old Electrical Engineer (BSEE '82) and this book through now 3 editions has been at arms' length for all 33 years. Just superb. The whole approach and style is practical by guys who have built instrumentation for the whole career- includes theory where necessary but not big derivations like a college text- just equations and sample design process.

    This is the best single book on electronics in my library. I have been experimenting and working with electronics for more than 45 years but I am constantly wanting to refresh my understanding of details. The original Art of Electronics had a place of pride on my shelf and this is a great update to that version. It retains the easy-to-read style of the original and adds updated information on new components. If you are interested in learning about electronics, or in refreshing what you learned years ago, this is a great book to add to your collection.

This is a way to make voltage references that is not very common. All the section I have read are easy to understand and a joy to read. Excellent reference book: they do not make you spend time because does not enter into deep mathematical developments, which goes straight to the point and solve problems. Complementing this, I would say that should be printed on thicker paper and, at the same time, with a more robust binding. In addition to this, I would choose a bigger type (from time to time, you will need a magnifying glass to read it).

    This is THE must have book if you have any interest in electronic circuit design or need a better understanding of electronics and you don't want to go through a year of calculus first. Whether you're a student, a tech, a maker, an EE major or graduate, a scientist, a part time hobbyist or something else and want to gain an understanding or especially master electronics, then get this book. The shipping was true Amazon Prime fast and the price that was the cheapest I've found. The book is a 1000 page hardcover thing that starts at the component level of introduction and quickly develops into a very accessible compendium of useful how to practical understanding and teaching that it will take what ever it is you are doing and just make you sharper. You know? It's one of those tools that will give you an edge. I find this book is too good to put on the shelf. I like to keep it nearby. For fun, you may want to look up the YouTube interview that the author Paul Horowitz did with Adafruit. The interview will give the history and philosophy and reason for the book in addition to content insight. Fascinating stuff.

    Why I chose to buy this book:
    I've always been on the fence between learning EE or ME. I flipped a coin to help aid my decision and got my BSME. Recently graduated, I now have a job designing mechanical systems and I'm good at what I do. Now that I went through college and have some real-world experience I'm pondering having a master's degree. I can either continue what I'm already good at and get my MSME or learn if the grass is greener and get an MSEE. I concluded that I need to work through a few books and really grasp the world of electrical engineering before I make a decision I might regret later.

    Knowing that some college text books are grossly over-priced, I looked through a copy of the second edition to see if it's worth the $90+ price tag. I couldn't believe the amount of information this book contains! I was pleasantly surprised that the newest 3rd edition was released only a few months ago as some of the components and graphs from the second edition are a little bit dated. It's going to take me a long time to get through this book, but from what I've seen already this is truly the holy grail of circuit design. I kept my book from my EE101 class in college so I can refer back to it whenever I need to remember how to do some calculations.

    A great reference text that should be in every EE's lab.

    I think this text's chief claim to fame is its ability to blend theory with application. Far too many textbooks are designed for use in collegiate courses where an instructor is there to fill in the gaps but this one is an instructor in itself. It provides in-depth analysis of countless subjects lke lots of other textbooks but also provides lots of real world circuit examples and part numbers you can either use directly or use as inspiration to find an equivalent part (say, for example, if the parts are obsolete).

    Worth every penny, and that's not something I have said for any other engineering text I've purchased over the years.

I bought the first edition in 1982 when I was studying Physics in college, and it lit a passion in me for Electronics that hasn't faded yet -- I pretty much owe Horowitz and Hill my 31-year EE career. I wish I had this book years ago. I do wish it came with an electronic version though as sometimes it would be nicer to carry a smaller book. Additionally, there is reference to the X'd chapters that will be an additional supplement. I would have like to see this supplement included with the book.

    This is the third version of the book by the same title.Edition is a less accurate description,because the first 2 books have information which is relevant to the time they were released,and some chapters were deleted or modified simply due to the evolution of technology.But for researchers,having EDs1 and 2 are still valuable in their own right. Written in plain sense English,AoE continues to help beginners to Engineers in the "art" of how electronic circuits work,and is generously illustrated with practical circuits,formulas and advice to help get that Next Idea from paper to real world experience...

    This 3rd edition provides a nice update to a classic, and invaluable, reference for anybody who works with electronics. The biggest complaint I have about this edition when compared to the 2nd edition is that one of my favorite features has been removed. The 2nd edition had pages at the end of each chapter showing circuits that provided good and bad example s utilizing the concepts covered in that chapter. These segments are valuable enough that I won't be retiring my 2nd edition any time soon.

    Incredible book. Some errata in the initial 100 pages are worth watching out for, however this book is something every person interested in electronics should have- professional or hobbyist. I myself am a second-year E&E student at university.
    When I go to bed I read 2 hours, and when I wake up next to the book another 2 hours of reading ensues. Then during the day I think about the gems of knowledge this book shares. This book is so amazing, it should actually be a well-kept secret- like a treasure on an island.

    Best money I spent this year for sure.

    This is the digital and analog electronics bible. I didn't realize how much I didn't know after reading this monster (1165 pages). This is the best electronics reference book you can buy. It is expensive, but considering how much information, expertize, and editing went into this book I can see why it cost so much.
    I'm a satisfied customer.

    To me, there is no one more important book in my life than H&H. I certainly do not know of a better electronics text (and I like electronics texts).
    Further, I believe my career in engineering boils down to a few distinct pushes in that direction before it was in my blood (and therefore too late). One of the big ones was getting a copy of AoE 2nd Edition in school.

    So, I would have bought the 3rd edtion no matter what.

    Incredibly, the 3rd edition has expanded many of the things I loved about the 2nd edition. The section on low noise design is much better and much more useful and it was pretty great before. The digital stuff is obviously much more relevant (although it may not stay that way). The "circuits from the masters" sections and the case studies of specific circuit designs are fascinating and useful (although I do miss the hilarious "bad circuits" sections).

    Finally, and most importantly, you can tell that H&H themselves were active engineers in the world between the last edition and this one -- building circuits and solving problems and reading other works and being influenced by the work and scholarship and generally just continuing to rule. The dedication to Jim Williams showed that like me and all other analog nerds I know out there, they had been eagerly reading all his stuff. The section on microcontrollers exactly parallels some of the design ideas, biases, and gut feelings that I and other embedded engineers have taken the past fifteen years developing by plowing through all the exciting architecture and tool changes that have happened from EEPROM PICs to ARMs.

    Finally, the intellectual integrity, raw practicality, and HANDS-ON-ness of this book are unparalleled. If everybody were required to read this book before designing circuits, there would be a lot fewer crappy circuits out there.

    Oh, yeah. And it's fun, too.

    I have just started diving into the contents. It definitely is not a beginner book but if one gets past that, they have made a real effort to develop an intuitive sense of how analog circuits work. Ultimately, this book can help anyone trying to make system level decisions, be it through understanding of the circuits or the vast amount of IC information that has been curated for the readers's pleasure.

    Quite the cookbook! Many very useful circuits with just enough detail as to why they work or don't work and their limitations. I loved many of the anecdotes as well; like the discussion of voltages generated on the closing of a reed switch with a magnet: consultations with physicist colleagues resulted in (BS) discussions of dissimilar metal work functions and Fermi-level electrons, while the real cause was static charge in the glass envelope! I can relate to this kind of "expert" opinion myself in my own field (chemistry)! Very informative and also funny! Great book!

    I rarely write reviews of anything, but this is the exception. This is simply the best book on the subject of electronics. If it were up to me, all colleges would use this book as an introduction to Electrical Engineering. While some people can learn about electronics from mathematical models and explanations, the Art of Electronics focuses on an intuitive understanding, which (for me) is a much easier way to learn.

    I dip into the bucket of past successes, pleased by the cool way EE is still alive and well, especially in Analog. I love the honest comments here and there attacking the errors and lies that crop up in actual Work. I was only disappointed that my old book was not listed in the references, but this is NOT a math text about esoteric operational transfer functions. It is an extremely thorough Practical handbook that hopefully will advance the field of EE for years to come. I sold my freshman vacuum tube books during my first job out of university and wished there was a book this valuable for op amps and transistors, etc. (B-Brown and HP live too!) Well worth the price, even if you find just one useful truth in it, to save your next design. And you should always write ASMs (A**-Saving Memos)!

    All the glowing praise from luminaries much more entitled to an opinion than I am certainly seems to be justified. The sheer volume of information curated for ready use is staggering. The term "encyclopaedic" is readily justified.

    That brings me to my one wish. If ever there was a volume that cries out for an ebook version for easy access via iThings it is this tome. It would be wonderful airline reading, but that borders on physical impossibility. True, my one-volume microform edition of the OED would be more ungainly, but that falls short of a glowing endorsement of the exercise.

    So please, gentlepersons at the most noble Cambridge University Press, please take pity on those of us who would like to soak up spare moments with this book, and give us an ebook edition to accompany the physical artifact.

    If your looking for an Electronics book for study, reference or whatever, just buy this book. I have a small library of electronic books & their all in this book. So much money wasted on the rest of the library I've purchased. Plus this book is written so a nerd-halfling can understand. You don't have to be a full blood nerd to understand & enjoy this book. The book is set up to teach you about Electronics & not to try to impress the reader with the writers knowledge & accomplishments....it's not a Bragger-Book! It's just a great book of knowledge.....worth every penny of the price. Even if you can't afford a couple packs of Ramen noodles after the purchase, you can read & feed your mind with this really great book while your growling stomach keeps you awake at nights.

    I am a happy owner of the 2nd edition, and just received the third from Amazon the night before last. There is much to say about this book as I get further into it (yes I am reading it cover to cover).

    Things you will recognize from the first 2 editions: The enthusiasm for electronics comes through in the writing, the clean descriptions and supreme attention to detail in the quality of the schematics, images, and tables.

    As a practicing electrical engineer, I've had the full complement of the usual textbooks which are way more theory and less practical experience. However even today, this book (and it's predecessor) are the ones I reach for to answer a quick question. It's a fantastic tutorial and reference.

    I'd recommend this to anyone who already has an interest electronics and wants to learn more. It's a book you will keep around and use for a long time. I am so glad to see the 3rd edition.

    I recommend reading the included prefaces (from each of the 3 editions) it's a slice through 30 years or more of the history of electronics.

    I just received mine today. Skimming around and reading much of the precision and power chapters showed this book retains the wonderful style of previous editions. Of course after 26 years there are many updates and additions, but good stuff from the past is still present. I have only two regrets: I'll never relive the magic of reading The Art of Electronics the first time, and now I'm waiting for the X chapters. Highly recommended for new and old readers.

    And a sad note: The authors mention the difficulty of experimenting with tiny surface mount components but offer no solutions. I'm afraid if these two haven't figured it out it may be an insurmountable problem.
